Litterbugs
Conversation with Matty today as we walked outside:
Matty: I see someone was a litterbug there.
Me: Oh, I see that too. That’s not very good is it?
Matty: I wonder what kind of bug we’ll be then. (Long pause). Maybe, throw trash in the trash can bugs?

An exchange with Matty
Matty: “Who made me?”
Me: Thinking…
Matty: “Who made me? Who made you? Who made Sarah? Who made Dada?”
Me: “Well, that’s a good question.” Pause. “God made us.” And before I can try to say more,
Matty: “No, I don’t think so.”
Me: “Oh, who do you think made us?”
Matty: “Mr. Rockwell....
Introducing...
We may have to change the subtitle of this blog to “Tidbits from my days with Matty…and Sarah!” Sarah Abigail raced into this world on September 27, 2012 at 11:57 pm. She is beautiful, joyful, and utterly spectacular.
Quotes from Matty
“Do you know what word I love with all my heart? I love the word caution with all my heart.”
“That bench takes my breath away. It’s so big.”
Potty training
As I’m holding him with one hand and reaching for a piece of TP with the other hand, he says, “I wish you had octopus hands, because they could hold me on here better than mama and dada hands can.”

Innocence
1/22/12
I’m back after a long hiatus. Matty is now 3 years old, and today I learned that he doesn’t know what a gun is. And that is unusual, because he knows a lot of things. He saw a cartoon-type drawing in the New York Times depicting Samuel L. Jackson’s character in The Avengers holding a very large gun. He asked me what the man was holding, and when I hesitated, he...

Old Friends
Matty likes to choose a stuffed animal to bring with him when we go in the car. Today he chose one of his lions. When we arrived at our destination I opened the back door to get Matty out of his car seat. He greeted me with this question and answer, “Mama, do you you know who’s back here? It’s Lion and your old friend Angelico Bear.”
Nap song
Today at naptime Matty asked me to sing my song for him. I made it up and last sang the song a month or so ago, so I had to struggle to remember. It goes something like this, “I once loved a little boy. His name was Matty. And I loved him.” I couldn’t remember what came next, but Matty of course helped me out. “Say the names you call me, Mama.” Oh yes, that was the...

While eating lunch today Matty said, “It’s too windy for Angelico Bear out there today.” I love when he calls himself one of my names for him.

Fears
Matty is afraid of the blue numbers on the stove, the microwave, the cable box. He says he doesn’t want them to see him or to say “boo” or “poop” to him. Also afraid of the smoke detectors in the house. Poor dear fellow.
We went to the library yesterday, and two older louder boys were playing at the train table. Matty was a little afraid of them, but he went over to the train table, took one of the toys (a dinosaur), and brought it back to the little table we were playing at. He did this many more times until all the other boys had left at their table were the trains in their hands. Our table had every single...
Very cold out today, and we weren’t super bundled, so on our walk back to the car from Robeks Matty asked me to hold him. “I’m going to put my head down on you Mama. Will you keep me warm?”
Matty has taken to keeping things warm under his monkey blanket. As in “I’m going to put my pumpkin hat under my monkey blanket to keep it warm.”

Matty has taken to calling me “Tuls” and “Honey.” Is this guy for real? He’s two years old!
Today Matty asked me, “Mama will you be my friend?” Oh good gracious child, how I love you. I said, “Yes Matty, I will always be your friend.”

Rock collector
I love that I find rocks and wood chips in the washer and dryer these days. Much more fun than coins.

Happy
Such a great day seeing an old friend today. Matty had fun too- met her little baby girl, played with new toys, tried new foods, and slept the whole ride home. Couldn’t ask for a better day.

My love for this baby boy is overwhelming. It bubbles up inside me all the time, even when he is at his most exasperating.
XOXO
First real hug and kiss from Matty today. Normally if you ask him for a hug he just runs up to you, kind of buries himself in you and lets you hug him. Today he used his arms and wrapped them around me. Then around Andy. And then around both of us. So wonderfully lovely.
